Rabeang Kaew Restaurant

Rabeang Kaew is one nice Thai restaurant of Korat City, located on Yomarat street. Charming in the nice setting, open air garden or air conditioned inside. The food was of an excellent standard both for Thai and non-Thai. If you have no idea what to order, ask them for special menu of the day. It works for me. We always have fabolicious dishes!! The price is reasonable.

Korat Science week 2009

On Thailand National Science Day, 18 August every year, there's a ceremony to pay respect to the Father of Science of Thailand, His Majesty King Rama IV, also known as King Mongkut, and this year 2009, the major ceremony in Korat is held at Suranaree University of Technology.

King Mongkut devoted his spare time to study of astronomy and was able to predict the accurrence of the total solar eclipse, at Wa Kor sub-district in Prachuap Khiri Khan province on August 18, 1868 over a century ago-so well as if he were equipped with modern scientific equipment.

In 1982, the Bangkok Bicentennial Anniversary Year, the Thai Government designated him the “ Father of Science of Thailand ” . The Thai Scientists are all grateful to him for his pioneering spirit in introducing modern science to national development. Therefore, they all reached a consensus to make August 18 of every year the “Thai National Science Day”.

In Korat, Suranaree University of Technology (SUT) organised Korat Science Week 2009 during 18-19 August 2009. Many people, students were invited to join the event. At Surapat II Building, students from many schools all over Northeastern region (Issan) presented their sciences projects.

Khon Buri Sanctuary in Khon Buri District

Khon Buri is a district in southern part of Nakhon Ratchasima Province, 58 kms from Korat City. Khon Buri in Thai language means the origin of the river, which refers to one of tributaries of the Mun river passing through. In the past it was called Ban Khon Buri. When the town grew, it was changed to be Mueang Khon and Khon Buri finally.

In 1907, this area was a sub-district (King Amphoe) of Chok Chai district. It was called King Amphoe Chae because the city center was in Tambon Chae. As Tambon Khon Buri was very far from the center of Pak Thong Chai district, the government made it to be administrated together with the sub-district Chae in 1939. At the same time, it was officially upgraded to a full district and renamed to Khon Buri.

Khonburi Sanctuary / Prang Khon Buri

Prang Khon Buri located in Ban Khon Buri, Khon Buri Sub-District, Khon Buri District. In the area of Ban Khon Buri School. Traveling from Korat city, take highway 244 pass Chok Chai district, turn right into the road no.2071 for 20 km, and look for a school in the area.

City Gate in Korat City

There're 4 City Gates situated in 4 directions of Korat City.

Pratu Chum Phon or Chum Phon City Gate is the only original one left located in the west side of old town area behind Thao Suranaree Monument. It's be built during the reign of King Narai in 1656, made from large stones and bricks, covered with plaster.

On the top is a watchtower made of wood with a tiled roof and decorated in the Thai style.

Another 3 City Gates, were rebuilt, located in other 3 directions of the town.

ประวัติประตูเมืองในโคราช

สมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา ในแผ่นดินสมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราช (พ.ศ. 2199-2231) โปรดให้สร้างเมืองสำคัญที่อยู่ชายแดนให้มี ป้อม ปราการ จึงให้ย้ายเมืองที่ ตำบลโคราช อำเภอสูงเนิน มาสร้างเมืองที่มีป้อมปราการและคูน้ำล้อมรอบขึ้นใหม่ ในที่ซึ่งเมืองโคราชตั้งอยู่ในปัจจุบัน เมืองนี้กำแพงก่อด้วยอิฐ มีใบเสมาเรียงรายตลอด มีป้อมกำแพงเมือง 15 ป้อม 4 ประตู สร้างด้วยศิลาแลง มีชื่อดังต่อไปนี้

- ทางทิศเหนือ ชื่อประตูพลแสน นัยหนึ่งเรียกประตูน้ำ
- ทางทิศใต้ ชื่อประตูชัยณรงค์ นัยหนึ่งเรียกประตูผี
- ทางทิศตะวันออก ชื่อประตูพลล้าน นัยหนึ่งเรียกประตูตะวันออก
- ทางทิศตะวันตก ชื่อประตูชุมพล

ประตูเมืองทั้ง 4 แห่งนี้ มีหอรักษาการอยู่ข้างบนทำเป็นรูปเรือน (คฤหาสถ์) หลังคามูงด้วยกระเบื้องดินเผามีช่อฟ้าใบระกาเหมือนกันทุกแห่ง ปัจจุบันคงเหลือรักษาไว้เป็นแบบอย่างแห่งเดียวเท่านั้น คือประตูชุมพล ซึ่งกรมศิลปากรได้ขึ้นบัญชีสงวนรักษาไว้เป็นโบราณสถานเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2480 นอกนั้นทั้งประตูและกำแพงเมืองได้ถูกรื้อสูญหมดแล้ว
